Die Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität
feiert 2018 ihren 200. Geburtstag. Eine wichtige
Institution, die aus der Region nicht mehr wegzu-
denken ist. Welchen Einfluss hat die Universität
auf die Region, auf das Leben hier?
Die Universität Bonn ist mit dem Hauptgebäude
und den über 350 Gebäuden nicht nur räumlich
mitten in Bonn und der Region verankert, sondern
auch wirtschaftlich, gesellschaftlich und kulturell
einer der zentralen Player in der Wissenschafts-
region Bonn/Rhein-Sieg. Wir bilden den Nach-
wuchs aus, der zu einem großen Teil hier im
Rheinland bleibt und aktuelles Wissen in die Un-
ternehmen und öffentlichen Institutionen bringt.
Unsere Forschungsergebnisse tragen dazu bei,
dass die Region in vielen Bereichen Innovationen
hervorbringt. Gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern
engagieren wir uns für eine dynamische und
innovative Entwicklung vor Ort. Unsere Studieren-
den, gerade auch die internationalen, tragen
zum Flair von Stadt und Region bei. Sie bereichern
die Kunst- und Kulturszene und sind natürlich
auch ein wesentlicher Wirtschaftsfaktor. Außer-
dem führen wir mit der Kinderuni, dem Schüler-
programm „fördern, fordern, forschen“, der
Zusammenarbeit mit „jugend forscht“ und engen
Kooperationen mit Schulen aus Bonn und dem
Rhein-Sieg-Kreis den Bonner Nachwuchs schon
früh an die Wissenschaft heran.
Welche Bedeutung hat die Entwicklung der Stadt
Bonn als UN- und Kongress-Standort für die
Universität, ihr Angebot, ihre Studierenden und
ihre Lehrkräfte?

will be celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2018. It
represents a very important institution that has
become an integral part of the region. What influence
does the university have on the region and life here?
The University of Bonn, with its main building and
over 350 other facilities is not only geographically
embedded in Bonn and the region, but also econo-
mically, socially and culturally a key player in the
Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region of science. We educate the
younger generation, many of whom remain here
in the Rhineland after their studies, providing our
companies and public institutions with state-of-the-
art knowledge. Our research findings contribute
to making the region an innovator in many areas.
Together with our partners, we are committed to
dynamic and innovative development in the region.
Our students, especially the international ones,
contribute to the flair of the city and region. They
enrich the art and culture scene, and are naturally
also a key economic factor. In addition, we maintain
close cooperation with schools in Bonn and the
Rhein-Sieg district in the form the Children’s
University and the “fördern, fordern, forschen”
(foster, challenge, discover) school programme,
thus already introducing the youth of Bonn to science
at an early stage.
What is the significance of Bonn’s development as a
UN city and conference location for the university,
its offer, its students and its academic staff?
Bonn as a UN city offers the university new perspec-
tives: We have established joint degree programmes
with the UN and are working in very close coope-
ration to position Bonn as a city of sustainability.
