Der 18. Oktober 1818 war ein wegweisender Tag
für Bonn. An diesem Tag wurde die Rheinische
Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität als sechste
preußische Universität durch den preußischen
König Friedrich Wilhelm III. gegründet. Bonn war
idealer Standort für eine akademische Ausbil-
dungsstätte der neuen preußischen Provinzen
Rheinland und Westfalen und verfügte außer-
dem über ein überzeugendes Raumangebot
durch die beiden leerstehenden erzbischöflichen
Schlösser. Heute zählt Bonn zu den großen Uni-
versitätsstädten Deutschlands und ist ein bedeu-
tender Wissenschaftsstandort.
Zu den berühmten Studenten gehörten unter
anderem Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Friedrich
Nietzsche, Max Ernst und Konrad Adenauer.
Papst Benedikt XVI. lehrte vier Jahre als Professor
und Dr. Joseph Ratzinger an der Katholisch-Theo-
logischen Fakultät. Heute leben in aller Welt
rund 200.000 Alumni. Aktuell zählt die Bonner
Universität rund 36.000 Studierende, 550 Profes-
sorinnen und Professoren, 5.500 Beschäftigte
an der Universität und rund 5.000 weitere am
Universitätsklinikum.
Die Feierlichkeiten zum 200. Geburtstag erstre-
cken sich über das ganze Jubiläumsjahr 2018.
Höhepunkt ist der eigentliche Geburtstag, der
18. Oktober, der gleichzeitig das Akademische
Jahr 2018/19 einläutet. Über das Jahr hinweg
wird in den vier Quartalen jeweils ein Schwer-
punktthema vorherrschen und neue Einblicke in
die Universität ermöglichen. Insgesamt wird es
rund 100 Veranstaltungen geben.
18 October 1818 was a ground-breaking day for
Bonn. It was on this day that the Rhenish Friedrich-
Wilhelms-University was founded by the Prussian
king Friedrich Wilhelm III as the sixth Prussian
university. Bonn was the ideal location for an
academic institution in the new Prussian province
of Rhineland and Westphalia, and also provided a
convincing offer of space and facilities with the two
vacant archiepiscopal palaces. Today Bonn is one of
Germany’s largest university towns and a significant
hub of science.
Its most notable alumni include Heinrich Heine, Karl
Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Max Ernst and Konrad
Adenauer. Pope Benedict XVI taught at the University’s
Faculty of Catholic Theology as Professor Joseph
Ratzinger for four years. There are today about
200,000 alumni living all over the world. The Uni-
versity of Bonn currently has about 36,000 enrolled
students, 550 professors and 5,500 staff, as well as
a further 5,000 employees at the University Hospital.
The celebrations for the university’s 200th anniver-
sary will last throughout the whole of 2018. The
highlight will be on the actual anniversary of the
founding date, 18 October, which will also mark the
start to the 2018/2019 academic year. There will be
a special theme for each quarter of the year, offering
new insights to the university. Altogether, about 100
events are planned.
