Drachenfels Railway
A monument to the history of technology
A ride on the oldest cog railway in Germany offers an excursion with vision
to probably the most well-known vantage point in the Siebengebirge, the Drachenfels high above the Rhine valley near Königswinter.
The route of just under one and a half kilometres to the upper station on the Drachenfels plateau covers a difference in altitude of 220 metres with inclines of up to 20 percent. Drachenburg Castle together with the Museum on the History of Nature Conservation in front of the Castle can be reached from the stop half way up. The Drachenfels Railway has been operating since 1883. You can imagine what it once looked like when steam locomotives were running in the old days from the old one installed at the lower station.
